A key insight at that point was to consider what may be the two core challenges of concurrency, synchronization and communication, and decide which was the most important. If you have different activities (such as processes or threads) going on in parallel, they must occasionally synchronize with each other, for example when they need access to a limited-sharing resource such as a printer or a communication line; and they must occasionally communicate data to each other. The decision in the initial CSP was to consider communication as the primitive operation, based on the observation that for P to send out some data and Q to receive it, they must both be ready for it; in other words, they must synchronize. Communication, then, implies synchronization (but not the other way around). Hence the “C”, for Communicating, in CSP. Processes (the “P”) can use channels for communication.
