The Fate of eMachines By 2004, eMachines was acquired by Gateway, known for cow-print boxes. Gateway was battling cost control, pricing, and quality issues and saw eMachines as a solution. But the merger highlighted the worst traits of both companies. In 2007, Acer purchased the combined entity and retired the eMachines name in 2013.
